Cinco de Mayo marks the day the French army of 6,500–8,000 attacked the "under equipped" Mexican army of 4,000. On May 5, 1862 the Mexican defenders decisively defeated the French invaders. In essence the spirit of beating the odds is as alive today in boxing as it was that day in Puebla, Mexico.
